The Ultimate Guide to Applying for a Hong Kong Vacation Scheme (25-26 Edition)

For any aspiring lawyer in Hong Kong, the path to a top-tier training contract runs directly through a vacation scheme. These schemes are extended, multi-week interviews where law firms decide who to hire. The competition is fierce, the process is opaque, and the stakes are high. But it is not impossible.

This is your roadmap for the 2025-26 application cycle. We are pulling back the curtain to give you the insider strategies our team of lawyers (from Magic Circle, Red Circle, and Vault 15 firms) use to coach students to success. Follow this guide, and you will move from being just another applicant to a must-have candidate.

Before you write a word

Phase 1: The strategic blueprint

Success begins long before you open an application form. The top candidates are those who have a clear strategy.

1. Understand the timeline

Firms hire on a rolling basis. Applying early is a significant advantage. Mark these dates in your calendar now. (For a live, constantly updated list, use our free 2025-26 HK vacation scheme deadline tracker.)

  • September to October: Applications open for vacation schemes.
  • November to December: Assessment centre and interview for some firms; winter vacation schemes take place.
  • January to March: Application deadlines, followed by assessment centre and interview. This is the main hiring season.
  • June to August: Summer vacation schemes take place.

2. Choose your target firms intelligently

Do not use a scattergun approach. Group your target firms into tiers based on their practice areas, culture, and your academic profile. Our Hong Kong firm intel directory breaks down what each office actually does.

  • UK Magic Circle & Silver Circle firms: Known for their huge trainee classes, global reach, and structured training. Highly prestigious but incredibly competitive.
  • Top US firms / Big Law: Famous for high-stakes deals, much smaller trainee intakes, and extremely high salaries. They look for exceptionally confident and commercially minded candidates.
  • Red Circle firms: Top-tier mainland Chinese firms with a growing and powerful presence in Hong Kong. Worth considering if you are interested in China-related work and have strong Mandarin skills. Many of these lack a structured vacation scheme, often calling it an "internship" instead.

Insider tip

Don't just read the firm's "About Us" page. Ask specific questions like "What were the major M&A deals this firm's Hong Kong office worked on last year?" to build real commercial awareness.

Your first impression

Phase 2: Crafting the perfect application

This is where you make your first impression.

1. The CV and cover letter

Graduate recruiters spend less than 30 seconds on each CV. Yours must be concise, powerful, and tailored.

  • Use the STAR method: for every experience, describe the Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Connect your experience to the firm itself and make it clear why you should be hired.
  • Mirror their language: read the firm's graduate recruitment page. If they emphasise "global mindset" or "commercial acumen," use those exact keywords in your application.
  • Tailor every single application: a generic cover letter is an instant rejection. Mention a specific deal, partner, or practice area that interests you at that particular firm.

2. Acing the psychometric tests

Before a human even reads your application, you will likely face an automated test. The most common is the Watson Glaser test, which assesses critical thinking. Do not underestimate it.

Your ability to infer, deduce, and evaluate arguments is under scrutiny. Many top candidates are filtered out at this stage simply because they haven't practised enough.

Insider tip

You would not walk into an exam without studying. Do not take this test without practising. Use our free Watson Glaser practice test to get familiar with the format and question style.

Passing the screen

Phase 3: The interview gauntlet

If you pass the initial screening, you may face a series of interviews designed to test your intellect, personality, and resilience.

  • The HR / screening interview: this is a competency-based interview. Be prepared for questions like "Tell me about a time you worked in a team" or "Describe a complex problem you solved." Have three or four strong examples ready using the STAR method.
  • The case study: you will be given a business problem and asked to analyse it and present a solution. They are not testing your legal knowledge; they are testing your commercial awareness and logical reasoning. It helps to know how Hong Kong firms mark case studies before you sit one.
  • The partner interview: this is the final boss. It will mix CV questions, commercial awareness questions ("What news has interested you recently and why?"), and a test of your personality. They are asking one fundamental question: would I want to work with this person until 2am on a deal?

Insider tip

Practise explaining a complex topic (like the impact of interest rates on M&A) in simple, clear terms. This demonstrates the clarity of thought firms are looking for.

The problem

Why do so many top students fail?

Even students with perfect grades from top universities get rejected. Why? Because academic success does not guarantee application success.

The process is a game with unwritten rules. Students fail because they lack:

  • Insider knowledge: they don't know what recruiters really look for behind the corporate jargon.
  • Strategic preparation: they prepare for each stage in isolation, without a coherent strategy that links them all together.
  • Targeted practice: they read guides but don't do realistic mock interviews or timed practice tests.
